GRAction# 5/03 "Protect Forests and Environmental Activists / Honduras"

Oct 3, 2003
Followup Action

Please send a message today to the president of Honduras, demanding protection for Bertha Oliva and her family.

Bertha Oliva is the General Coordinator of the Committee of Families of the Detained and Disappeared in Honduras (COFADEH), one of the main human rights organizations in Honduras. COFADEH actively promoted the June “March for Life” in the Olancho region and demanded protection for leaders of that march who received death threats. At the request of Bertha Oliva, Global Response issued emergency action alerts, calling on Honduran authorities to guarantee the safety of environmental activists in Olancho. Tragically, a 23-year old leader of the “March for Life” was murdered on July 18. Global Response then mounted a major campaign, calling for human rights protections and supporting the “March for Life” demands to halt all logging in Olancho and stop construction of the Babilonia dam in Sierra de Agalta National Park. Please see gra.php?i=5/03 for the Global Response action alert.

During the last week, Bertha received a series of threatening phone calls, including threats against the life of her young daughter.

Please send a fax or letter to Honduran officials listed below.

  • Remind them that the Organization of American States (OAS) resolution of June 7, 1999, article 3, directs states to guarantee the life, liberty and safety of human rights defenders.

  • Urge them to take all necessary steps to guarantee the safety of Bertha Oliva and her family, especially her children.

  • Demand an exhaustive investigation into the origin of the threatening phone calls.

Thank you for continuing to support the Honduran activists who are so courageously determined to protect their forests and national parks.
