GRAction #2/08 Stop Dams; Protect Patagonia's Rivers and Forests / Chile
In Chile’s southern Patagonian
region, the local people have established a “Reserve of Life,” pledging
to protect the area’s glaciers, wilderness, rivers, forests and endangered
species. Multinational energy companies, however, want to dam at least 5 of Patagonia’s
wild rivers and erect a colossal 1500-mile power line to carry electricity to
Chile’s northern industrial zone. In support of the “Reserve of Life,”
Global Response is writing letters to stop this dangerous project before it destroys
Chile’s ancient and unique temperate rainforests.
